A "castle of twenty one fires". That was how Castello di Sismano, one of a number of medieval hill top strongholds built to defend Todi, was described in the city's archive in 1322, at a time when the importance of a settlement was indicated by the number of fireplaces.

Recently transformed into a stunning period residence, Castello di Sismano has eleven wonderfully romantic suites, in which you can expect to find both traditional Umbrian furnishings and modern day amenities such as internet connectivity, acclimatization and satellite television.

From the field to your plate
Part patrician fortress, part ancient farm, Castello di Sismano is surrounded by 1000 hectares of agricultural land, vineyards, olive groves and meadows where the area's highly prized Chianina cattle graze.

Today, the old stables and cellar have been converted into Castello di Sismano's "I Due Papi" restaurant: a charming eatery in which to enjoy the best of Umbria's traditional cuisine.
The primary ingredients for "I Due Papi"'s flavorsome dishes arrive direct from the farm, and include Chianina beefsteaks and game grilled in the massive fireplace in the dining room.
The great outdoors
A vacation at Castello di Sismano is the perfect opportunity to explore the glorious Umbrian countryside. Without once leaving the estate, you can spend hours walking or cycling through a landscape, part of which has been transformed into a game reserve.
Those who choose to remain within the walls of the castle hamlet, might easily be found soaking up the sun by the property's panoramic swimming pool.
