History and hospitality in Friuli
Three reasons why you'll love it here
- A holiday in one of Friuli's oldest castles
- The sumptuous suites in the Tower
- Grounds with secular trees, Chinese roses and streams
If you've always dreamed of staying in an Italian castle, you'll love the period residence Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra: a finely restored castle hamlet in the tiny border region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia.
The castle and the countess
The moment they pass under the "Cistigna" arch, guests find themselves immersed in the magical world of Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra, the first recorded mention of which dates back to 565, when it was constructed for the Counts of Strassoldo.
Today, after supervising years of meticulous restoration work, the Countess Lella Williams di Strassoldo and her husband Paul have opened the doors of their sumptuous period home to those travelers in search of history, culture and luxurious hospitality.
The mill, the tower and the castle courtrooms
At Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra, beautifully appointed Bed and Breakfast accommodation is available in just 4 bedrooms and 2 suites. The spacious bedrooms are situated in the old rice mill, the original wheel and grain grinders of which can still be seen.
Lavishly decorated with items of antique furniture and period artworks, the "Radetsky" and "Michael" suites are located in the "Tower", the oldest part of the complex
Next to the main body of the castle, "Vicinia", the building which once served as the castle's courtrooms and administrative headquarters, has been converted in charming, two floor apartment, complete with romantic portico opening on to the gardens.
The gardens
Castello di Strassoldo's historic park, traversed by spring water streams and a river, offers a magnificent display of secular trees, Chinese rose bushes and exotic plants: an explosion of color which, on Palm Sunday and the last weekend of October, the general public can enjoy, during the "Flowers, Water and Castles" and "Fruits, Water and Castles" exhibitions.
Grounds for celebration
With its imposing salons, extensive grounds, and orangery, the castle provides the idyllic setting for unforgettable weddings, private parties and banquets, and is a much sought after location for high profile meetings, workshops and incentives.
