Atrani: introduction
Atrani is sited in a truly romantic setting. The town's position on the mountain slopes forms a natural amphitheatre, overlooking the sea, with its principal Piazza, Umberto I, as its epicentre. The houses are all painted in pale colors, in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape, and can be reached by various flights of steps and narrow alleyways.
There is an impressive number of churches in the heart of Old Atrani: the Franciscan Monastery of Santa Rosalia, the Church of St Maria del Bando, the Church of St Salvatore de Birceto, the Chapel of St Gertrude, the Church of St Maria Immacolata, the Church of the Carmine which houses a nativity scene dating back to the 1600's and the Church of St Michele.
Atrani continues its ancient agricultural traditions, with its small vegetable gardens and fruit orchards where typical products of the Amalfi coast are grown: aubergines, tomatoes, walnuts, olives, citrus and other fruits.
The beautiful clear water of the sea and the abundance of fish feature in various traditional celebrations held in Atrani, including the Sagra del Pesce Azzurro.
