There's only one thing in the world more beautiful than this luxury hotel on the hills above Florence and that's the view!
In the peaceful little town of Fiesole, and only a few minutes away from the city in which the Italian renaissance was born, the 15th century Belmond Villa San Michele enjoys breathtaking views of the Tuscan capital, the river Arno and Chianti.
Michelangelo, a monastery and the last supper
A Franciscan monastery until the start of the 19th century, when Napoleon dissolved the monastic orders, the façade of the villa has been attributed to none other than the great Michelangelo.
Whilst much of the original artwork which adorned the monastery is now housed in the various museums of Florence, a number of masterpieces can still be observed within the rooms of the building, including Nicodemo Ferrucci's 17th century fresco of the Last Supper sited in the halls once used as the Monks' refectory.
Suites steeped in history
In this 5 star hotel in Fiesole, what were once somber monks' cells have been transformed into sumptuous bedrooms and suites, furnished with exquisite items of period furniture and equipped with every modern amenity.
Originally the monastery library, later Napoleon's headquarters in Florence; the Michelangelo suite stretches the entire length of the villa's façade, and enjoys stunning views of Florence, the Arno Valley and the rolling hills of Chianti.
The most dramatic suite has to be the Limonaia. Located in the former orangery of the convent, in the hotel's Italian gardens, the suite enjoys a prime location with a breathtaking view over Florence and the surrounding hills
The Donatello Suite, once the Prior's quarters, occupies a whole corner of the monastery, with two windows overlooking Florence and the Arno Valley and two enjoying the peaceful views of the Italian Garden and the wooded park.
